Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Our client based in Auckland serves Aotearoa New Zealand’s most culturally diverse population of approximately 600,000 people across East and South Auckland, offering unique opportunities for health professionals on both a personal and professional level. We are committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi; we aspire to having a workforce reflective of the communities we serve and achieving equitable outcomes for all.

The anaesthetic workload at this large tertiary teaching centre is busy, dynamic, clinically challenging, diverse and interesting. We provide approximately 32,000 anaesthetic episodes per year for all surgical services (except cardio-thoracic and neurosurgery). In addition to general surgery, orthopaedics, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology and gynaecology; we are home to the National Burns Centre, and receive tertiary regional referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb, plastic surgery, hands, and maxillofacial surgery. Up to 10% of our patients are low complexity paediatrics. Our tertiary obstetric centre delivers over 7000 babies annually.

To meet these demands CM District anaesthetists are collegial, flexible and skilled team members. Our anaesthetists have a true generalist skillset, though work together as a team to solve problems using individuals’ subspecialty interests and experience.

CM District surgical services operate over two sites. Middlemore Hospital is an 800-bed teaching hospital with anaesthetic services provided for 14 theatres, a busy Birthing and Assessment Unit, plus small amount of off-the-floor work in MRI, CT, interventional radiology, a newly built gastroenterology and respiratory procedural suite, and procedural sedation for pacemaker insertion in the cardiac cath lab or dressing changes on the National Burns unit. Middlemore Hospital has one of the busiest acute surgical units in Australasia, requiring specialist cover on-site in the evenings and weekends to support 7 fellows and 28 anaesthesia trainees. Eight kilometres away, Manukau Surgical Centre has 10 theatres, 60 post-surgical beds, an Anaesthetic Preassessment Clinic and an Anaesthetic-led four-bed Perioperative Care Unit that provides close observation and 2:1 nursing ratio. We also provide acute, complex and chronic pain management across both sites. Anaesthetists are rostered to work at both sites.

As the ideal candidate, you will have clinical experience in some, or all of the areas listed above, and will either be registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

We are a friendly and supportive department with a culture of continuous improvement. Departmental members are team players, treat patients and staff with kindness, and contribute to our collective skillset with a variety of clinical and non-clinical interests and skills. Staff are expected, and are supported, to participate in departmental administrative, quality assurance and educational activities.

Please note, if you are not currently registered in New Zealand and have overseas medical qualifications, you will be required to provide source verification of your qualifications for your registration application. For more information about the registration process and source verification of qualifications, please visit www.mcnz.org.nz.

We are an Accredited Employer with Immigration NZ and we can provide you support in gaining Accredited Employer Work Visa if you meet the Immigration criteria. We will provide suitable relocation package for candidates moving from overseas as well as outside of Auckland.

If you would like to be part of a friendly and supportive team and to contribute to the health and wellbeing of our South Auckland community, we would love to hear from you!
